Marie Fielder Center for Democracy, Leadership, and Education

The mission of the Marie Fielder Center for Democracy, Leadership, and Education, founded in 2016, is to encourage research that addresses social issues and problems in democracy, leadership, and education.  As a space outside of the academic programs, the Center provides a venue for faculty, students, and alumni to engage together in research, public discourse, and advocacy.

This research and policy center promotes the principles of its namesake – Dr. Marie Fielder – as exemplified through her life’s work, her philosophy, and her contributions to equity, education, and justice.

Led by Center Director Orlando L. Taylor, the activities of the Fielder Center include:

  • An annual Marie Fielder Medal for Social Transformation – awarded to a nationally prominent figure whose life and career represent the values of Marie Fielder;
  • Marie Fielder Graduate Fellows – cohorts of Fielding doctoral students who engage in a project focused on democratic leadership and education; and
  • Operation of several federally funded grant programs – the CASL and Leadership Academy programs
