Ukraine Crisis: Some Lessons Learned

2022-03-14T18:05:27-07:00

By Richard Appelbaum, PhD Doctoral Faculty – School of Leadership Studies Director of Leadership for Sustainability Doctoral Concentration As I write this, I cannot erase the images of Ukraine under siege. A bloodied mother, ready to give birth fleeing from a maternity hospital reduced to burning rubble. Endless lines of refugees under Russian fire in “safe” evacuation corridors. Ukrainian teenage boys and girls are taking up arms in what must seem a fight to the death against overwhelming odds. I am inspired by Zelensky’s fearless courage and resolve; I am enraged and frightened by Putin’s determination to reclaim Ukraine at [...]

2022-06-13T14:23:43-07:00

Join Us for the Virtual Meet the Author Event To raise the issue of sexism, Fielding alum Lynn Schmidt, Ph.D. (HOD’09 and EBC’12), wrote Antisexist: Challenge Sexism, Champion Women’s Rights, and Create Equality to explore what sexism is, how it impacts women, one’s role in perpetuating sexism, and how to stop it. With that in mind, the book was published on International Women’s Day, March 8, 2022, an event campaign to #BreakTheBias this year. Everyone has sexist biases, implicit or explicit. A United Nations study reported that nine out of ten men and women have at least one deeply [...]

International Women’s Day: Dr. Orlando L. Taylor Reflects on the Legacy of Dr. Marie Fielder

2022-03-08T18:16:14-08:00

by Orlando Taylor, PhD Distinguished Senior Advisor to the President, and Director of the Marie Fielder Center for Democracy, Leadership, and Education The origin of the phrase “A rising tide lifts all boats” is often—and incorrectly—attributed to John F Kennedy in a speech he made in 1963 in support of a dam project. The aphorism, or a version thereof, has been around for centuries in the Chinese language. Regardless of the source, the phrase is most appropriate to remember during Women’s History Month since many of the enormous accomplishments and contributions of women of diverse races, cultures, and nations have [...]
