Using a Solutions-Focused Approach to Coach Business Owners and Entrepreneurs

Should we coach business owners and entrepreneurs, challenged by the commitments and decisions needed to run a business, the same way as we coach individuals or teams navigating job loss or retirement transition or the same way we coach someone navigating a loss from death, divorce, or a child leaving home for the first time?

All scenarios listed above are ripe for a coaching conversation and the tools and techniques that we bring to the table to serve our clients. It is at this juncture that we should do well to understand that coaching is not a one-size-fits-all pursuit. Not all clients fully grasp what coaching is or is not.

As coaches, during our Discovery Calls or meetings with potentials client, too often we spend less time seeking to understand what their needs or issues are, so that we can educate and inform them about our background, expertise, and methods that we can use serve them.

What we have found when coaching Business Owners and Entrepreneurs, is that they’re looking for someone who can provide a solution to solve an immediate problem.  We find that clients care less about our education, credentials, the tools we use, how many sessions we’ll have, or the fee per hour we are going to charge than whether we can help them solve their problem. This need for immediacy oftentimes requires a more solution-focused approach to the client engagement.

What can we do to employ a solution-focused approach with our clients? If we are in business for ourselves, we too should have the mindset of a business owner or entrepreneur. We should also be aware that business owners and entrepreneurs function in an environment of constant change, disruption, and uncertainty. They and we have something that needs to be accomplished but just don’t know how to do it. Our business owner and entrepreneur clients are looking for someone, a trusted advisor of sort, who can engage with them in a partnership and formal way to tackle to their uncertainty and work with them to drive ideas and action forward toward a solution.

During this EBC Professional Series Webinar, we will explore further why a shift from “Feel Good” to a “Solution-Focused” Approach will often result in more successful outcomes with business and entrepreneur clients.
