Fielding will have a presence at the 83rd Annual Academy of Management (AOM)’s Annual Meeting from Aug.4-8 in Boston. This year’s theme centers on “Putting the Worker Front and Center.”
For years, the Fielding community has developed a long-standing relationship with AOM and participates in the annual conference. Fielding community members present papers, seminars, and professional development workshops. In the past, our alums and faculty members served on the committees and received awards.
This year, Patrice Rosenthal, Ph.D., Human and Organizational Development doctoral faculty member is the Program Chair for the Organization Development and Change (ODC) division. In this role, she led the creation of the ODC conference program, including the invitation, review, selection, and scheduling of papers, symposia, and workshops.
At AOM Annual Meeting in Boston, Dr. Rosenthal will be introducing the ODC Distinguished Scholar 2023, Jean Bartunek of Boston College. She will also be active in the ODC Doctoral Student Consortium and many other events. Recent Ph.D. in Organizational Development and Change graduate Colleen Cuddy, Ph.D., is also part of the consortium. Additionally, Organization Development and Leadership Program Director Keith Ray, Ph.D., and Joan Goppelt, Ph.D. (Human and Organizational Systems, ‘09) will present a Professional Development Workshop on Saturday, Aug. 5, entitled “Practicing Dialogic OD in a World of Linear Change Frameworks.” Doctoral faculty member Michael Manning, Ph.D., will also present a Professional Development Workshop.
“Upon joining the ODC Ph.D. program at Fielding, I became a student member of the ODC, OMT, and DEI divisions of AOM on my advisor’s advice,” Dr. Cuddy said. “Throughout my studies, AOM has been a valuable resource. I’ve taken advantage of virtual programming and professional opportunities that supplemented my learning at Fielding and exposed me to new ideas in organization and management theory. This week, I’ll attend AOM in person for the first time. I am one of 24 students selected to participate in the ODC Doctoral/Junior Faculty Consortium to develop future publications for my work in team effectiveness and discuss career pathways. I’ll be mentored by Jodi Hoffer Gittell and Inger Stensaker — a dream come true! I look forward to continuing my involvement in AOM as I continue my professional journey.”
For the Fielding community, the most traveled bridge to AOM has been via the Organization Development and Change (ODC) Division. Several HOD faculty are active in this division, including Patrice Rosenthal, Ph.D.; Keith Ray, Ph.D.; Michael Manning, Ph.D.; Frank Barrett, Ph.D.; and Kathy Geller, Ph.D. Many other divisions may also resonate for those in the Fielding community, including Social Issues in Management; Management, Spirituality and Religion; Organizations and the Natural Environment; and more. Fielding Board of Trustees members John Bennett, Ph.D. (Human and Organizational Systems, ‘06), and Gary Wagenheim, Ph.D. (Board Vice Chair and Treasurer) are also involved in AOM.
“When I think of AOM, I think of vibrant, international space for cutting-edge conversations about individual, organizational, and social change,” Dr. Rosenthal said. “I want to be part of this worldwide network because it provides vital resources and connections for research, teaching, and practice. Annual conferences are fantastic, abundant, overwhelming — and if you play it right, also fun.”
