Toward a Renewed Engagement with Indigenous Thought for the 21st Century

Dr. Mathias Risse
Mathias Risse is the Berthold Beitz Professor in Human Rights, Global Affairs and Philosophy and Director of the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at Harvard University. He also serves as Director of the Program on the Ethics of Emerging Technologies at the Edmond J Safra Center for Ethics. Mathias’ academic work has focused on questions of global justice ranging from human rights, inequality, as well as the philosophy and politics of technology. He has published extensively on these topics, including a recent book, Political Theory of the Digital Age: Where Artificial Intelligence Might Take Us, published in 2023. He is currently completing a book on indigenous thought.
Indigenous Critical Reflections on Traditional Ecological Knowledge

Dr. Lara Jacobs
Dr. Lara Jacobs (she/her) is a Citizen of Muscogee (Creek) Nation and has Choctaw heritage. She earned her Ph.D. in Forest Ecosystems and Society from Oregon State University and has a master’s degree in environmental studies from Prescott College and a Bachelor of Science degree in Women Studies from Oregon State University. Dr. Jacobs is a complex systems scientist who focuses on how outdoor recreation activities in Tribal Treaty lands can create ecological and pathogenic impacts on Tribal communities. She also studies Traditional Ecological Knowledge, Indigenous value systems, climate change, STEM education, and co-equity-based management paradigms in the context of Indigenous Peoples’ rights.
Both events will be available on Fielding’s YouTube channel after Oct. 11. As a reminder, Fielding’s offices will be closed on Monday, Oct. 14 in observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
