Coaching skills have long been a core competency for organization development professionals working with individuals and teams. However, the field of coaching has brought new research, theories, and practical skills that organization development consultants can apply to their research and work. In my own experience as an internal organizational development consultant for 11 years at Hewlett-Packard Company, I found that integrating coaching in my work with executives and teams to be invaluable. As my own company evolved after leaving HP, I now do mostly executive and team coaching in my own practice. I find that the field of OD greatly informs team coaching, and the field of coaching greatly informs leadership development, individual change, and team development. I strongly recommend all OD professionals seriously consider coaching certification as part of their broader toolbox.
