Dr. Patricia Arredondo named ‘Woman of Color Changemaker’
Fielding Graduate University faculty fellow Patricia Arredondo, EdD, has just received two outstanding honors from the psychology community.
Last month she was named as one of 25 psychologists to be featured in the newest panel of the American Psychological Association (APA)’s traveling exhibit “I Am Psyched! Inspiring Histories, Inspiring Lives: Women of Color in Psychology.” Dr. Arredondo, who is the founding president of the National Latina/o Psychological Association and past president of the American Counseling Association, will appear on the panel “Firsts: Women of Color Changemakers” during the exhibit’s national tour.
At the APA’s August convention, Dr. Arredondo will also receive the 2018 Anthony J. Marsella Award for Peace and Justice, from Psychology for Social Responsibility (PsySR). The Award is given annually to individuals with demonstrated records of peace and justice advocacy and activism.
“Servant leadership is core to my personal and professional identity,” Dr. Arredondo says. “I apply principles of social justice and multiculturalism to advance institutional awareness and change wherever possible. I hope these recognitions will inspire other women on their journeys to be changemakers.”
Dr. Arredondo’s APA roots run deep: She is past president of Division 45, from which she received the Asuncion Miteria Austria & John Robinson Distinguished Mentoring Award in 2017 and the Lifetime Research Award in 2016. She also received the Elder Recognition Award for Distinguished Contributions to Counseling Psychology from Division 17 in 2015, and the APA’s Henry Tomes Award for Lifetime Contributions to the Advancement of Ethnic Minority Psychology in 2013.
Her latest book is Latinx Immigrants: Transcending Acculturation and Xenophobia (2018). She will be a keynote speaker at the 2018 Latina Researchers Conference in New York City Aug. 23-25, and at the Brief Therapy Conference in San Francisco Dec. 7-9.
