Fielding is a member of the professional academic consortium of 117 university schools of education that seeks to advance the importance and rigor of the education doctorate. Thus, we stand in solidarity with the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate (CPED) in denouncing The Wall Street Journal’s publication of Joseph Epstein’s belittling op-ed towards Dr. Jill Biden and disregard for her doctorate degree.
Fielding’s EdD in Leadership for Change
For the past twenty-five years the EdD program at Fielding Graduate University has equipped graduates with the necessary tools to be catalysts for change in their schools, agencies, or communities. Per approval by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC), the Fielding’s Doctor of Education (EdD) degree is designed for professionals inspired to tackle the challenges in today’s educational, non profit and human services systems. Leaders, administrators, innovators, teachers, activists, and advocates further develop skills and profound insights from doctoral-level study at Fielding. They are change agents, working for social and ecological justice.
The EdD degree helps students harness their own transformative power, building on their existing knowledge and experience. Energized by the freedom and encouragement to explore interests they care deeply about, our students move beyond knowledge consumption to knowledge production.
Since the program’s launch in 1996, we have 622 alumni of the Doctor of Education program. 21 program alumni completed the Community College Leadership concentration and moved on to faculty, administrators, and presidents in community colleges. Community college work was the area of focus for Dr. Jill Biden doctoral dissertation, “Student Retention at the Community College: Meeting Students’ Needs.”
Educational leadership is not the only avenue that our illustrious alumni have taken. Fielding EdD grads are leading in all of the following areas:
- Business/Finance
- Computer/Information Technology
- Counseling/Social Services/Mental Health
- Healthcare
- Human Resources/Organizational Development
- Military/Government
- Consulting/Coaching
- Teaching/Educational Administration

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)
Another major area of focus for Fielding in all of its programs is diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The EdD program’s alumni are representative of the diversity found in the United States and around the world, with every major ethnicity represented. The current student body of the EdD program ranges in age from 25 to 73, with the median age of 52. Fielding students are in good company, as Dr. Jill Biden received her Doctor of Education at the age of 55. The gender and ethnic make-up of the student body aligns with the institution’s focus on DEI. 71% of the current EdD student body identify as female. 33% of the students identify as black or African American, 23% identify as Native American, 21% identify as white, and 15% multi-ethnic.
The Fielding EdD program is an avenue to leadership positions for all.
Tiner-Witt Educational Advancement Scholarship Announced
The EdD Leadership for Change Program at Fielding Graduate University is proud to announce the new scholarship honoring long-term faculty members and leaders of the Program, Dr. Kathy Tiner and Dr. Judy Witt.
The scholarship honors Dr. Kathy Tiner and Dr. Judy Witt, long-time academic leaders and faculty members of our EdD program. Over the years, both invested their passion, skills, and time in helping the Program’s students and alumni develop into strong change agents who have transformed educational and social service agencies, systems, districts, and schools—in elementary, secondary, and postsecondary domains. This scholarship, bearing their names, ensures that Drs. Tiner and Witt’s legacies will endure by way of providing financial support for current and future students to persist in and complete Fielding’s EdD Program.
