Media Psychology Ph.D. candidate Sarah Barker has been selected as a panelist for this year’s international NZ Web Fest in the Online Creator Conversation’ where her work has been officially selected in the non-fiction documentary podcast category. This selection is for her project “VR: A Path to Mental Wellness,” exploring how virtual reality can be a powerfully effective tool for working with chronic pain, PTSD symptoms, depression, and other human ailments. The show is practicum work for a Ph.D. in Psychology with an emphasis in media and technology at Fielding Graduate University.

The NZ Web Fest was created by Keith Barclay and Fiona Powell in 2015. It presented its inaugural edition on 7 November at Media Design School in Auckland, New Zealand, celebrating web series and online video content. The inaugural and each subsequent event have included conference sessions and screenings, topped off with the presentation of awards.

Ph.D. candidate Sarah Barker is an innovative Educational Designer with a unique blend of expertise in media psychology, immersive technology, and higher education. With over 20 years of experience in curriculum design, teaching, and media production, she brings a fresh, technology-forward approach to educational development, specializing in creating dynamic learning environments that leverage virtual reality (VR), online platforms (Discord, Slack), and multimedia content.Her work is grounded in the belief that technology can transform education by fostering engagement, improving accessibility, and personalizing the learning experience. She is currently a candidate for the Ph.D. in Psychology with an emphasis in Media and Technology at Fielding, and has an MFA in Film and Television Production from Dodge College of Film and Media Arts, which allows her to seamlessly integrate adult learning theories with practical, media-rich content.

Sarah has successfully designed and implemented courses in media production, virtual reality, and mindfulness-based learning, supporting both educators and learners in navigating the evolving landscape of higher education. She is passionate about using technology to meet the needs of diverse learning populations and looks forward to continuing to create innovative educational experiences.
