12 Days of Cancer
Cancer is often perceived as a defeating battle often accompanied by hopelessness and a robbery of vitality. But for Kavita, a cancer survivor, it was a transformation of untapped human connection and resilience. What started as a casual mention of a small indentation during a routine doctor’s visit led to a life-altering diagnosis testing her strength. Kavita Freeman, a Fielding Graduate University administrator released a powerful memoir “12 Days of Cancer from Patent Leather Shoes to Pearls” offering readers an intimate invitation to navigate cancer diagnosis during the height of COVID-19 while maintaining professional responsibilities.
Kavita was no stranger to cancer’s devastating impact, having endured younger sister to the disease. However, the tables turned when she was at the frontlines of the battle herself. Kavita writes “I recall commuting to work and looking at my reflection thinking this must be a mistake; I don’t look sick.”
The horror stories of companies not supporting their employees quickly dissipated once Kavita confided in her supervisor, Dr. Orlando Taylor. Kavita writes “The compassion and understanding presented to me filled my heart with such comfort that I felt a jolt of courage.” The support and readiness of her colleagues to stand by her side cultivated a profound depth of community for Kavita.
This powerful memoir encapsulates how disease reshapes the paradigms of life. Undergoing surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation required Kavita to adapt even the smallest aspects of her routine, like journaling. She recalls the uncertainty of survival and how even typing her experiences in her journal helped alleviate the pain in her fingers.

About Kavita Freeman
When you think of your bio, you think of who you are and what you have accomplished. I approach this topic with one more step: when did I really begin living my life? I am a proud mom, wife, and cat owner. My life truly began after my diagnosis, meaning I look at my garden with a different lens. I enjoy the perennials that bloom each year, remembering when I would spend tireless hours weeding and pruning. Now, I added a bird feeder to my garden, and it shows me how nature cared for my garden for many years. I also love baking and decorating, which I now do with my kids. This infusion of collaboration contributes to days filled with laughter, tasty treats, and a bunch of creative ideas. I embrace my modified life now and consider my future accomplishments an undefined adventure.
